Search Engine Tips:

Getting indexed by the major search engines is important - they can send you a lot of traffic. In fact, they are responsible for sending the majority of visitors to most sites. The search engines below are the most popular, used by millions of people every day.

Ranking Method: How the search engine determines your ranking. The closer you are to the top, the more people will check out your site. Here are some of the various methods Search Engines use to rank sites. Below you'll find a table describing which search engines use what!

• Title, Page Text, Meta Tags, Alt Tags: Keywords (words which your visitors might be searching for) in these parts of your page will help. If your not sure what these terms mean, check out the Sitelaunch Checklist.
• Site Popularity: How many other sites link to yours. The more sites that link to yours, the better your ranking.

Meta Tags: Controlling how your Web page is indexed

In the absence of any other information, most search engines will index all words in your document (except for comments), and will use the first few words of the document as a short abstract. It is however possible for you to control how your page is indexed by using META tags to specify both additional keywords to index, and a short description. Let's suppose your page contains:

<META name="description" content="We specialize in grooming pink poodles.">

<META name="keywords" content="pet grooming, Palo Alto, dog">

The search engines will then do two things:

• They will index both fields as words, so a search on either poodles or dog will match.
• They will return the description with the URL. In other words, instead of showing the first couple of lines of the page, a match will look like the following:

Pink Poodles Inc
We specialize in grooming pink poodles.
http://pink.poodle.org/ - size 3k - 29 Feb 96

AltaVista will index the description and keywords up to a limit of 1,024 characters.

META tags are placed between the <HEAD> and </HEAD> tags at the top of your web page. Depending on your HTML editor you may need to use the 'edit source code' feature to put them in.

Other Tips:

• Title: Your title is very important; it is one of the first things read by a visitor, and is also very important when a Search Engine ranks your site. A title should be descriptive, and contain your keywords, briefly outlining the focus of that page.
  • A bad title: "Jim's Music!"
  • A good title: "Jim's Jazz Online - concert listings, new CDs, music reviews and more!"
• Alt Tags: Alt Tags are words or descriptive sentences inserted into an image link. This tag is used by some search engines, and is quite easy to include. The alt tag also allows visitors surfing without images to understand the site better. Most browsers display the alt tag as the image is loading. Here is how to include the tag in the HTML source code. If you are using an editor to make web pages, it should be quite easy to include the tag.
